17 July – Greek Evening

The preparation for this event actually started on the afternoon of Friday the 15th. A dozen or so of the male members came down to the club and helped put up the large marquee over the quarterdeck. This is no small undertaking and took nearly three hours of hard work. With the Greek bunting strung and the tables and chairs arranged on the quarterdeck most of the blokes decided to call it a night.

While this was going on Jean and Diana were preparing Greek food in the galley. Also hot work. I left the club at nearly 7pm and the girls were still chopping vegetables and frying meatballs for all they were worth.

18 July – Greek Evening, supper and musical entertainment

I think some thirty-eight people attended this event with most of them sitting outside on the quarterdeck with the marquee acting as a giant sunshade. Peter and Mike were busy serving drinks from the bar while the band U3A set themselves up to provide an evening of light jazz.

Jean had provided a first course of stuffed vine leaves, olives and bread with a accompanying dip on each table which seemed to go down a treat. The warm night and music conjured up a great ambience. The band (consisting of two sax players two guitarists, a drummer and a singer) were all outstanding and loudly applauded after each number.

Next everyone was invited to visit the galley and select their main course. This consisted of a variety of dishes including Keftedes-meatballs, Gigantes Piaki-big beans, Tabbouleh-bulgar wheat salad, Horiatiki-Greek feta salad, Tzatziki-cucumber and yoghurt.

This was followed by a dessert of Fruit with Greek yoghurt
I stress that all the above was prepared with fresh ingredients (well done girls!)

All in all it was a great evening. Many thanks to the team who helped with the set-up and those who came back on Sunday morning to help with the washing up and general clear up and take down the marquee. To U3A for their music and last, but not least, to Jean and Diana for their tireless work in the galley preparing and serving all the amazing food.

Mid Summer Cruise

Yesterday evening we enjoyed our annual Mid Summer Cruise and Pub Supper. The flotilla consisted of four Lasers, three SUPs, two double kayaks, two rowing boats and one motorized patrol boat - and at six pm we all made our way through Sunbury lock to the Weir pub. After a refreshing drink and some food, the return journey was impacted by an absence of wind and a malfunctioning lock. Fortunately the lock keeper was able to assist and after a brief wait we made our journey home on a calm and flat river, whilst enjoying the beautiful sunset light
